Is Motherboard compatibility a big deal?

The size difference may be an issue- it might not fit in the case. The other problem may be slots. If the old motherboard had an AGP slot and you used an AGP graphics card, it might not work in the newer motherboard (new graphics cards use PCI Express slots).
