Can I make my zebra finches comfortable with me?

Well, I'm not going to lie. I used to be mean to my finches. When I first got them I had no idea they shouldn't be held, and I really wanted a pet I could hold. So I chased them around all the time. Now I just want them to be comfortable in my presence, which they are not. I heard that finches don't trust their owners ever again after a bad experience. Is this true? And will they ever like me again and be comfortable when I'm around? Please give me ideas on how I could make them comfortable with me.
