How do you move on from a bottle?

My son is almost 6 months and I want to get him onto a beaker or cup. Now that I'm weaning him I want to give him water between meals. I have tried a straightforward cup but he just tries to chew it and the liquid goes everywhere. I've also tried 3 different training cups (with non spill spouts) but again he just chew the spout and doesn't get any of the liquid in him at all. I don't want him to stay on a bottle forever!
